I have these types of headaches from time to time. When I told my eye dr, he asked if I was seeing spots, or kaleidoscope effects just prior to onset of the headache. I was, and he said its a type of migraine. I Also have them at times without the spots & colors. Think then they're usually sinus related, stress related, or it's time for a new contact lens prescription.
Check with your family physician or eye dr to be safe! Especially if they're frequent!
