How did the New York Knicks get thr name knicks?

Knicks is short for Knickerbockers. They were named after a famous Dutch character called "father knickerbocker" who wore Knickers - pants that were rolled up to the knee. He was an early symbol of NYC.

They pulled the name out of hat. I am not kidding.

It comes from the word knickerbockers...I always thought that knickerbockers were like pants or something, but now that I think of it that doesn't really make sense hah. Sorry I couldn't answer the full question...hope I helped a little.
