When you use "These" and "This" what's the difference?

there is only one if you say this,these means two or more.....i want this cake if you want one,i want these cakes if you want two

The difference between these and this is that these is used to show many (plural) while this is used to show one (singular). For example in a sentence, these are students and this is a student.
