How do you connect a return flight to somewhere else?

How do you connect a return flight to somewhere else? In school, I have a flight from Vegas going to Male, Maldives. On the tickets, it says that the plane is flying back to Vegas. For what I'm doing, that makes no sense. I'd rather stay there and fly to my other place? Help? A detailed explanation would be really nice. I'm not good with kind a stuff...I really need help. I'm sorry if I'm supposed to know this stuff.

When you buy a return ticket, it means that you are buying a ticket to go to a certain location then comeback. For example, a return ticket to London from the US will take you to the UK and back. If you decide to go to Spain, you will have to come back to the UK to use your return ticket or buy another ticket from Spain to the US.
