You probably need to compare the actual models you are considering, many of the high end power equipment manufacturers produce cheap homeowner grade machines mass produced in china, no warrantee, sold online, for a discount. Try to get help from a knowledgeable source that is unbiased, perhaps a dealer that sells both brands. My personal opinion is John Deere, but I know they make *some* light duty machines that don't quite cut the mustard if you know what I mean.
I have a John Deere and I say it's the BEST. It always starts, mows perfectly and it is easy to fix. This is a 22 HP 48" cut riding mower. When I mow it feels substantial and heavy with no metal rattles or annoying tics.
