Why do some fish eat their own poop?

I saw a fish do this once and wanted to know why it did something nasty like that.

iono, but they spit it out. maybe since ppl feed them from the top of a tank and food falls down they get confused and mistake the poop for food but once reliazed they made a error in identifying 'food' they spit it out.. if tht makes since

I believe that they don't actually eat it, but they see something floating in the water and in order for them to be able to tell what it is, they take it into their mouth...they should spit it right back out after realizing it isn't food.
