Can you use human shampoo on dogs?

???

Report as

I don't recommend it. Dogs lack the acidity to their skin that we have, so the pH is different in doggy shampoo than people shampoo. It can cause skin irritation, discomfort, and hair loss.

Thanks, candybar! I don't get why people will spend tons of money on toys, clothes and accessories for their dogs, but then want to cheap out on something so important!

so this is the right answer?

It depends on whom you ask, BlackRed47. I can only speak on what my vet has recommended and what my personal research has taught me.

No, Human shampoo depending on which brand your using has a potential of making your dog sick. I tried that and my dog was not feeling so hot afterwards. Stick with dog shampoo.

Dogs can absorb chemicals through their skin easily. I would not recommend this because dog shampoo is made specifically for them.

Dogs don't have the same oils we have and people shampoo can strip them of the oils there body needs to protect their skin. Kudos to you for asking before doing!

The only people that say you should not use human shampoo are those that do not know dogs, they simply read it on the label of dog shampoo... which also says to only shampoo every 6 weeks at the most. However, show doggers often bath their dogs once a week of more and the most frequently used shampoos are Pantene ProV or Neutrogena Anti-residue. The AKC says any baby shampoo (non-perfumed) or Coconut oil shampoos are also fine. Water by 50% or more.
