fierce= to show ferocity, a form of rage or anger and being unafraid. and its an ADJECTIVE in this sentence.

Fierce is an adjective, since it modifies the noun, dogs. Remember: adjectives modify nouns. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
