Whats the difference beetween scared and afraid?

This MY TAKE on these def's. Both have overlapping definitions and context more than they differ by far. However,"scared" leans a little more towards surprise; and "afraid" leans a little more to fear/fright meaning and both words have both elements in their def's. Again, in context, they can and often are interchangeable; but when u surprise someone from behind they may say "U scared me!". Once they know its u, they're not. I don't think 1 could use "afraid" in the same way except for that fraction of a second.LOL Not sure if that helps...
