They are made of tempered glass, but the filament inside (the part that shines) is made of Tungsten, which is an element with an incredibly high melting point. Also, the inside of the lightbulb is commonly filled with an inert gas such as Argon.

The actual protective cover is either made of plastic or glass. The part that is screwed into a socket is aluminum, and the filament wire is made of carbon.

No, the filament is made of tungsten. There was at one point in time a lightbulb that had carbon filaments, but the light was so intense and the fire hazard was so great that they didn't last long :b
