Why doesn't "ASK" let its' users self-monitor the site?

I'm kind of offended at the thought of someone else deciding for me what is "offensive" or not. Obviously everybody is different and what may offend you may not offend me. The beauty is that, just like with T.V. or the radio or a book or anything else, I can just move on or shut it off if I don't like what I see. And if I find something to be outrageously offensive then I or any other user should be allowed to flag it.

It's probably worth noting that tv, radio, and even books are "monitored", and there are generally guidelines as to what is acceptable and not acceptable.

The main issue with Ask, is that there is such a large age range of users who are on the site, and what might be appropriate for an adult, isn't the same as what is appropriate for a 13 year old. Self monitoring sounds like a great thing, but I'd be willing to bet that if we saw the shear amount of crap that the average website has to deal with on a regular basis, we'd all probably be more than happy to hand the job over to someone else ASAP.

While I do agree that with the age range that uses "ASK" maybe it is necessary to have monitors, I often wonder how some stuff is allowed, such as the same question being asked four times or "My grandma just passed out and is not breathing , what should I do?" while other silly but certainly not offensive questions get removed. Maybe there needs to be an "ASK" for adults.

Self monitoring never works for the very reasons you quote. Everyone has different view points and it becomes one big chaotic fight where eventually nothing realky gets 'moderated' honestly everyone ends up disgruntled. I for one am DELIGHTED to find a site that has structure, enforced rules and oversite otherwise it would be just another huge trash site filled with unreadable filth.

Self-monitoring would be a good idea but only if it's a self-run website. Users of this website vary in age ranges. Moderation is done to ensure that everyone is served as best and diplomatically correct as is possible without showing any hint offense to any one of the clients. Moreover, rules are good to ensure that there is harmony. Without rules and regulations, we would be running a chaotic website that does not satisfy the clients.
