No allowance. The family is not a welfare state. Make them earn everything and appreciate the value of work. But you can pay then for homework, grades, etc.

Yes it should. It's like a real job. The less work you do, the less you should be/are paid.

I believe it should be.. Personally, I do not get an allowance, because I'm on child support.. but if I did.. I wouldn't feel right if I got money for doin' nothin but playin' xbox all day.! I would want to earn my money from chores or community service..

For me allowance should be used as a tool to teach fiscal responsibility, or the value of money. When kids grow up they will have to learn how to earn and pay for things all by themselves. It is best to start the lesson early. Say your allowance $10 a week, and you have 10 chores to do a week. (loading the dishwasher after dinner, that's 7, and taking the trash out 3 times) If you fail to do your chore, because you just didn't do it, you lose $1. Now if the family goes out to dinner and there are no dishes, you keep you $1 because it is like a paid holiday. Now say you forgot to take the trash out one night , but do it the next morning, you lose 50 cents for not doing it on time.

I think a portion of your allowance should be set aside in a savings account. That way when something big comes up that you would like to buy you will have them money.
