Does anyone have a condition called synovial chondromatosis? It causes crystals to form in joints.

Very rare disorder. Usually in large joints. I have in my wrist, have had 4 surgeries and need more. Can't find the right doctor.

Just had my second knee surgery for SCM. Dr Hayden at OHSU in Portland Oregon did both. Very good surgeon that I would recommend to anyone. It is rare and saw several docs 8 yrs ago when I had my first surgery before finding someone who knew what it was and could actually do the surgery. Good luck as I am in recovery and it's not fun. On the sunny side... Be thankful its not in a weight bearing joint (knee, hip or ankle)

Good luck to you!

Sorry for your issues, I'm sure the knee would be tough. I have had 4 surgeries on my right wrist ( I am right handed). The DRUJ has been replaced with a prosthesis, my lower thumb joint removed and two other "clean up procedures". Mine startd in 2001. I have seen at least 6 surgeons, 2 ortho oncologists, had my slides sent to Mayo Clinic. I just saw a dr at Cleeveland Clinic who had to look it up online before he came in to see me. My wrist is so bad I fear I will lose my hand. It is very frustrating as you know-to watch yourself get worse and no one has answers. I live in OH but I traveled to KY for 3 of the surgeries to a hand specialist who invented this prosthesis. He no longer is able to help me. Thank you for your reply-hope your recovery goes well and the disease stays away this time.

Personally, I don't have the condition but those who have been affected by the diseases experience a lot of pain, stiffness and loss of motion in the affected joint. The treatment of this disease is frequently by means of removal of the loose bodies and of a partial or full Synovectomy. The treatment should be done by a professional doctor to avoid further damages. Visit http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1254671-overview for more details.

I am going in for my 1st surgery on the hip in a couple of weeks, they think it is Synovial Condromatosis, but only the Arthroscopy will tell (root and find...Ouch!). Everything I have found says it has a greater than 40% chance of reoccurrence but less with a synovectomy around 8%. Good Luck!

I may also have in my hip. I see the hip doctor in 2 weeks do they see the crystals in your xray? They can see crystal formation but the radiologist thought possibly pseudogout. Most have never seen SC. My wrist didn't show crystals even in many mris. But they were there at surgery. Mine had to be opened up, the joint was destroyed, had to have a prosthetic wrist joint. They don't work as well as hip joint replacements. Good luck with your procedure. As for recurrence-mine was back in 3 months just as though it had neer been touched. It is very important to get it all as the disease can be in the soft tissue, not just the joint, as mine as shown. I'd love to know how you do and what the outcome is if yu would like to share. Hopefully good news!

Thank you for your comment! On the MRI they found some loose bodies, one is over 12mm. They are not sure if it's SC or PVNS. I am not sure which I want it to be tho. I havent ever read about crystals, just loose bodies that calcify. T minus 15 days and counting. Are your crystal or cartilage?
