Why do a male cat holds a female cats fur when they mate?

For safety reasons. I'm sure you've seen kittens being carried by it's mother, it's a instinct that stays with the cat forever. The female chooses which male to mate with, but that doesn't mean much to the male. If you noticed when you grab a cat by the scruff of the neck, it curles up. This is because there is a nerve bundle that when clamped on causes slight paralysis.
