10-day trip in a car with 2 older Yorkies. What can you give them for motion sickness?

They have never traveled before. Will be stopping every night.

Don't assume that they will be carsick if they haven't travelled before. If possible take a few short rides before the trip to see if they cope well before you plan on drugs. Stay calm and act like its an adventure when you take them on their outtings. Barring that, ginger is a natural anti nausea product, so perhaps a ginger snap that contains real ginger might be all the help you need!

To remedy motion sickness, consider giving them Scopolamine, Promethazine or antihistamines like Dramamine. They should also avoid spicy foods, alcohol or overeating. Drinking carbonated drinks might also help. For more information, visit http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/motion-sickness-treatment-overview.

These are DOGS we are talking about! Of course they shouldn't have alcohol spicey foods or carbonated beverages!

Dramamine or sudaphedrine (taken thirty minutes prior to riding)

For most dogs that are carsick, good ventilation (opening a car window), having frequent breaks for water and stretching, and some over-the-counter pet medicine will work. At the last resort, you could ask your vet for advice. Some vets will give your dogs a tranquilizing shot/pill for the trip.

Are you sure they are going to have car sickness? if you are just assuming don't give them anything they may just be fine. I travel with my dogs often. I just don't feed them breakfast so their stomachs are empty. Mine will get a bit upset if I feed them. If you know they will get sick see your vet. They have motion sickness medicine for dogs.

Why did you waste your time in submitting such an unkind comment?
Report as
Unkind??? I'm a dog trainer. Gravol is for motion sickness? Did you actually read the link??
Report as
I believe it is you spelling that upset the poster. Gravel is small pebbles. I for one have never heard of Gravol. Your link mentions Dramamine, perhaps using that term would have helped.
Report as
Yes. Sorry. Darn autocorrect. You can get low dose gravol at any drug store and cut it in half. It works great but makes the dog a little groggy. Ask the pharmacist about it It's commonly used for dogs.
