Very sad but it's probably true. At the turn of the 20th century, about half of Americans were born with blue eyes. By mid-century the number had dropped to a third and today only about 1 in 6 Americans has blue eyes. The drop has to do with marriage patterns. As more fair skinned, blue-eyed individuals have children with those of darker complexions, the genetically recessive trait of blue eyes is replaced by the dominant trait of brown eyes.
