Making my first trip to a casino this weekend...anything I should know before I go?

Are there certain rules to follow for joining a game table, certain terminology to use? Is it appropriate to tell the dealer that you are new?

Aww, comon! It's at least got to be fun on some level...the excitement of *maybe* walking away with a little more cash in your pocket than you started the night with!! And doesn't all entertainment cost something? Have you seen movie ticket prices lately?? The casino is probably cheaper! lol

Thats right green for u

Where's the fun in that..?? I had a friend that said going skiing was tantamount to standing in a walk-in freezer and ripping up $100 bills.. My answer to that was, yes, but there isn't anyone to laugh and enjoy the hot chocolate with if I stand in the freezer... Go gamble!! Enjoy!!

Thanks FS!!! :) And just for the record, your freezer or mine? hehe

Lololol..we'll take turns at the freezer ;)

1 tip is jus so you don't spend too much but a budget on yourself so you don't lose it all, like put a budget for 1000$$ if you lose that, you quit for the night

Only $1000? lol

A whole freaking grand? Just give it to me! I could use it more than the casino!
Report as
Well, I could blow a grand on my first trip to a casino, but there's so many other things I can blow it on...like a "clothing optional/support Candy's college fund" club...lol
Report as
Lol! What I mean is budget yourself so you don't go over board n lose it all

Dont say you are new .... Dont get involved with someone that may start a fight .... Take the game serious because many people get offended when people joke around at card tables

Thank you! I'm a lover, not a fighter and I definitely take my poker seriously, but I've never played in a casino. I also thought I'd try out some other games (Craps, Roulette) that I've never played, but didn't know if throwing out there I was new would look bad. Won't do! Thanks again!!

A lot of casinos having training tables, start with those first. Obvious don't spend more than you wanted before you went and just enjoy yourself.

I was going to set my gambling budget at $100-200 in my pocket and an extra $100 in a wristlet wallet (for food and drinks). Thanks!!

Why would I regret it? If I set a budget and I am prepared to lose 100% of that budget, what's to regret?

If you are going somewhere that isn't Vegas or AC, absolutely tell the dealer you are new. They will give you good tips on when to bet and when to fold (when to walk away and when to run.. Wait, there's a song in there, lol) but seriously, make a budget and stick to it, making sure it's an amount you will be ok with losing.. Have fun...

Thanks! Contradicting info...don't say I'm new, say I'm new...ahhhhhh! It's not Vegas or AC, so maybe I will...or look for those training tables someone mentioned...

I know, hard to decipher all the advice.. This and that, but most people that gamble are doing so for a weekend of fun. They are not professionals. There is an expectation
(even in Vegas) that people will not know what they're doing. The last time I went to Reno, the dealer at the roulette table spent 20 minutes teaching me the game, telling me what to bet and how much.. It's their job to get you to the table to play, losing a couple of hands to "teach you" pays off in Spades for the casino.. Because you WILL lose, (i sure did) but you'll have fun doing it.

...We go to Vegas and Shreveport all of the Time; I Really wish you would just "start out"at the Slots...learn the ropes there, and Then move on to the Tables. The Pit Boss usually does Not Appreciate...chattery people, new people with a lot of questions,Drinks spilled on His Table...people who "Count"their Chips every Roll, and people who Ask..."Is it My Turn,now?"... Sit and Watch the Table you are interested in...Learn...Listen...and when you go baxk to your Room, pick your "Beginner's Book" up and Study..Westie.

I know how to play poker...I plan to play the tables a little and mostly stick with the slots. I'm not some hot shot ditzy blonde, so I know it's not acceptable to act like one...ever...especially when my money is on the line. Thanks for the info...don't anger the Pit Boss...got it ;)

I've lived in vegas over twelve years. I've done every game and been to or worked every party or "ultra club" in town. All over rated but... I work in the entertainment industry here so my opinion my be jaded. So... It doesn't hurt to tell a dealer you are new to a game, they are happy to help you because the dealer wants you to win. Its not their money and if they help you and win on their advise you should tip them. Those huge casinos and fancy lights aren't built on winners. The odds are clearly against you so set a budget and stick to it. Consider any money lost just the cost of entertainment. Consider your means and don't be afraid to ask for "comps" of free stuff like meals, up grade your room, show tix, etc. worst they can do is say no but they want your game play so use it to your advantage especially if you manage to hit a small jackpot or pull ahead at a table. They want that money back and will be willing to bend over backwards to keep you there and keep you playing. Just remember, huge hotels and fancy lights aren't built on winners so stick to your budget, ask for comps and should you pull ahead and they give you the "comps" take everything they offer and run like hell home with their money. If you won enough they will invite you back with outstanding rates on shows, rooms, food.... Of coarse the casino feels the crappy economy too so don't be too greedy but any play is good play for them. It's a balancing act out here, a game in itself really. Play THAT game well and get damn near whatever you want, play THAT game poor and go home crying that a casino took all your money and you got nothing to show for it. I really wish you best luck, the balence of play and comps becomes a matter of showing them you are a real player and getting your rewards as well even if you know nothing about the physical game itself.

You are welcome and thank you. Regardless of the casino or town it is the business of gaming, that said most of my advise applies. All I will add is that in las Vegas there is sooo much competition for your play in such close proximity these amenities are easier to achieve. Either way the dealer is on you side cause it's not their money and that person works for a salary plus tips. The dealer wants you to win and the salary isnt outstanding so take advise and hope for the best. I promise they are not trying to screw you, they just abide by the basic rules of the table. I do hope you win a ton of cash. I hope you let me know how it went for you. :)
