Do i really need to know the ratio for an 88 jeep comanche used rear end?

a junkyard owner told me that i needed to tell him the ratio for my replacement rear end. i was told since its a 2wd that it is not that important to know the ratio if i didnt mind the quickness of the gear. i am a female and dont reallly care about the quickness as long as it works. please advise. thank you, jackie

Tell him 373 (three seventy three, not three hundred seventy three). Just so you know, gear ratio means for 1 complete rotation of the tire the drive line rotates 3.73 times. it's determined by the number of teeth on the pinion gear and the number of teeth on the ring gear. so when you tell him 373 he will know you want 3.73:1 gear ratio. The post above sounds like the compression ratio. I'm not sure if jeep uses 373 like Chevys but it should be close. The reason you need the right gear ratio is to keep the speedometer accurate.
