Why do people try to be hard when they are not

I think the main reason why people try to be hard when they are not is so as to create some sort of shield. It helps them face certain situations and even appear to be more confident than they truly are. It can be just a show they put on in front of other people, but they are not the same when alone.

They are most likely mimicking someone they look up to. Anyone who pretends though has self esteem issues.
