Can I record music with just a mixer only? Or do I need a both a mixer and a multitrack? Which would sound better?

I've been trying to record high quality demos of my songs by myself for so long but it just hasn't been working out. Help please.

To record music, you need a mixer and a multitrack. Latest advancements have led to the production of software's that have both the mixers and the multitracks. A good example of software that multitasks is the MixPad.

Are you trying to record through your computer or straight to disc? The mixer is used to get the proper sound levels and the multi track allows you to record several different voices and instruments at the same time or seperately if you are the only one involved. Check out youtube there plenty of vids to help you good luck to you.

I'm recording each instrument separately by myself on different tracks. I thought that the mulitrack would be the obvious choice but then someone told me to record directly into a mixer that's plugged into the computer through this little box thing. Because it supposedly has a higher quality sound. But then I'd need recording software. So which is better and sounds better?

With the proper software on your computer and there are plenty of inexpensive or free ones it will emulate a multi track recorder. Many artists use this method when just starting out as studio time is so very expensive. To answer the question it will sound just fine using the computer method.
