Saliva is what is holding the DNA on a cigarette butt (in most cases)

The DNA in a saliva sample swab will last for as few as four days to as many as 15 days at room temperature. At COLD temps, it is stable for 30 days.

if there is blood (from chapped lips or mouth sore) i do believe it is a LOT longer.

It depends on where the cigarette is. If it is outside and gets wet and has sun exposure, it will break down the DNA. However if it is inside in a drier climate it can last a very long time.

True. If it gets rained on, that will usually destroy the sample (not always).

It will stay there forever, but you can't find it (like csi stuff) after so many days.
