hgirl, when you read Ecclesiastes written by wise King Solomon, you find he ignored God and tried the pleasures of money and life and none satisfied. The things of this world bring pleasure but only for a season and then it fades. They never fill that God-shaped space. So it is good that you have recognized that. You mention other religions but it seems you know the truth that Jesus is the only way. So, it's time to get back to basics. Many have already told you in the answers. If we love someone, we want to be in communication with them so prayer is important. If someone we love has written you a letter, you read it, over and over again. God has given you his Word. You need the fellowship with people who also love God. When we do, we encourage one another to love and good works. You need to be part of a Church where God's word is preached. A church that has good small group ministry where you can find close friends who will pray with you and for you and help you in your walk, and to grow. 1 John 2:19 speaks of people who leave and don't return because they were never believers. It seems your desire to return says otherwise of you. Good! So get going....

1st. Set up a time everyday to read the bible and pray. Have a quiet time. In that quiet time read a book of the bible - I'd say psalms - and get a prayer journal. Write in it as a regular journal and tell God all your feelings. 2nd. Ask God for help for every problem. And every time you hear a siren pray for that person. And ask God to help you regain your relationship with him.

Go to church
Read the bible
Pray a lot like before you eat and when u wake up and at night an in the shower or bath. Hope this helps! Remember God sent his only son to die for your sins!! John 3:16

Verses to help
Proverbs 3:5-6
John 1:1
John 3:16

Read the book of John. If you've read it, read it again. And pray without ceasing. Ask God to help you regain your faith. Beg him for help. Ask and you shall receive. Jesus holds the key to our salvation. I'll pray for you too. God bless you.

And in my prayers as well. I fell the compassion of Christ surrounding you right now, you have confessed your feeling and Jesus heard. Just close your eyes right now and imagine His love for you is so great that He knows your heart and hears your cry. You shall cry to Him and He will embrace you right now where you are and you will not have to seek further for God is your witness. You shall find Him right now, follow the suggestions and as you seek Him, you shall find Him . Be Blessed and recognize His Touch for He told me to tell you, He shall return to you what you miss and your sins are forgiven and are as far from you as the east is to the West!! Bless God!!!

Hummergirl, that's not wierd at all. Please remember the Bible says that the end of a thing is better than the beginning. You have an opportunity to be even closer in fellowship than you even felt before, you ran in to some disappointments. Your brothers and sisters in Christ that you read about in the Bible weren't perfect and had to repent just as you and I do. David, the Bible said, was a man after God's Own Heart. It was his repentance I believe. He may have failed miserably at times, like some of us (including myself) do, but his heart broke at some point and he cried out to God and God answered. We don't know, he maybe didn't exactly feel brand new right then as far as emotion goes, but he did accept that forgiveness and go forward. And, he encouraged himself in the Lord and was a man after God's Own Heart. He was the apple of God's eye. It's hard I think sometimes for us to accept how much God really loves us. But the Bible says He IS LOVE. So, He just IS. I believe He has no struggle loving us because of Who He Is. But, I do have to remind myself fairly often because I don't really "feel" so loveable always. Well, God Bless You, hummergirl!

It is not really steps to regain faith, but more of surrendering what you currently believe in and believe that God does exist, that Jesus does exist. You cannot simply say the words you have to believe there is a higher power and that the Christian/Prodestant view is what you agree with most.

@socially distorted... You don't really have to answer the question that I'm about to ask you, at least no need to post the answer to me, but I wanted to throw a question out to you. Here goes the question for you to ask yourself just in case you care about the one who posted the question at all: "When hummergirl asked for an answer on how to get closer to God as she desires to, how did my answer help direct her to a closeness to God, that she yearns for?"

AgeofSinfoniaFan

I had the same problem but I just started reading the Bible again (I hadn't read it in probly 4 yr. and now I really feel closer to Him. Despite what people will probably tell you on this site going to church isnt necessarily gonna help anything. I go to a REALLY conservative church that judges me bcuz I don't live up to their standard of "right" which really turned me against God for years, but I don't let it bother me now bcuz I've learned it doesn't matter what the church thinks God isn't theirs to decide how he wants us to live. Once I figured this out it really helped me to try to do what I think God would want me to,not what the church thinks. So I think there's a definint difference between regaining your faith and doing what the church says. Anyway hope I helped :)

Just because a church doesn't sing hymns written in The 1600 and 1700 doesn't mean they don't care about God

AgeofSin is right. You go to church to find religion... you look inside yourself for faith. And faith is what matters.

Seriiously though, being in the right church, a church that the Lord has led you to after you pray truly will help you. And scripturally, God does tell us not to forsake the assembling together of the saints and He did truly place the church in the scheme of things for a reason. And what, you will gain from it will be everything that God means for it to bless you with. And, you also, will be a needed part to that church because God will have placed you there and will use you as He sees fit in His plan for you. So, I believe that something is missing when we just don't go. But, He will lead you to the right one. I know in my life, He has. And it will definitely be one that fits with what scripture says and you will be spiritually fed there and grow. If those two things are lacking, then, that's one easy way for us to know that something is wrong, I do believe. And, for sure I would seek His Guidance in finding a new church. God bless you hummergirl. God loves you and can fully take care of you. Here's a thought I had today and it blessed me so much and I'll share it with you, because as a child of God, the same, according to scripture would be true for you: My thought today was this...Jesus has been interceding in prayer to The Father today in my behalf. How humbling is that? And, it's true! It melts my heart.

Magdalene that is wonderful Green for you, there are times when we may outgrow a church and I have had to leave. That's when I become isolated then when God places me somewhere else I have found that my growth and maturity and anointing is even stronger! Everything above is true yet sometimes we have to step back so that what we have learned can permeate within our soul. I call it taking a Sabbatical. God Bless

Get back into the word and find those passages that remind you of His faithfulness. Sometimes we step away but He's been there the whole time and there are so many reminders in scripture. Besides having a set aside quiet time just keep a running prayer going with Him.... Thank Him for the sun, and children you see playing and for the wonder of medicine when you drive by a hospital, and for police men that watch out for our safety.... You get it. And ask Him what He wants you to do and to be obedient when you figure it out, no matter how hard it might be.

Through confession, Bible study, prayer, regular church attendance, and obedience, we can develop a closer relationship with God. When you come right down to it, it seems rather simple, if not simplistic. But how do we develop a closer relationship with other human beings? We spend time with them in conversation, opening our hearts to them and listening to them at the same time. We acknowledge when we've done wrong and seek forgiveness. We seek to do right by them and sacrifice our own needs to fulfill theirs. It's not really all that different with our Heavenly Father.

Please have respect for the one's presenting the question and approach to answer based on THEIR requests would be my hope and very possibly theirs. Ya know, you wanting that closeness to God to be restored is a wonderful thing and maybe it will help you to remember that Jesus, by way of His Holy Spirit inside you is who is causing you to want that closeness. So, maybe you can feel better just basking in the knowing that He never left you and that He won't forsake you. Our feelings can lie to us, but scripture won't. God said that if any man (or woman) comes to Him, He will in no wise cast him out. Remind yourself of that. You remember your past, but if you repented and were really sorry for it, you must by faith believe that God forgave you. He says He will and try to remember that He places it, in the "sea of forgetfullness". He forgives us and then, once again, we are covered by the Blood of Jesus. So, God does see that Blood. He hears your cry as He identifies with that sinless Blood covering those sins He forgave you of. I believe that! Think on any truth, any lovely report, anything that has virtue and encourage yourself like David did. Read scriptures that confirm these things to you and please, forgive yourself!

It can expected to go through "dry periods" as you move into new levels of spiritual growth. I will go out on a limb here and recommend a couple of books that you may find inspiring. "Jesus' Plan for a New World" and "Falling Upward:a spirituality for the two halves of life" - both written by Richard Rohr.

If you need proof, I have several examples. First, the Big Bang isn't true, because matter cannot be created from nothing, so something would have had to exist before the universe to create it, something without a beginning or an end. That is God. If you know that but have a hard time believing the story of Jesus, then think that since Jesus is a part of God(notice how I say is and not was) then next to creating the world all of the healing and miracles he performed were easy. This also explains his resurrection. If you need help maintaining your faith, then set up a schedule so that you can read the bible regularly. And don't just read the bible, obey it and abide by it's rules. This should help keep you started.
