There are a lot of other questions to be asked there. What kind of dog do you want? Some breeds cost a lot more to breed/raise than others. Do you want a dog to be a companion or a working dog? Expect to pay more for a well bred working dog. The AKC website has lots of great info on picking a dog as well as reccomendarions for reputable breeders. Www.akc.org. The one thing I'll say with a lot of passion is avoid "designer dog" breeds. They are mix breed dogs usually with ridiculous price tags because someone has come up with a clever way to mix the names of two or more breeds (puggles, morkies, cockapoos etc.). Most people breeding them know nothing about producing good quality, healthy puppies with sound temperament. Additionally, with a little research you can find just about any purebred breed in a shelter or rescue situation for a lot less money, and you are potentially saving a life. There are also an endless number of wonderful mix breed dogs that are already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, vet checked and temperament evaluated in shelters just waiting to be your best friend!
It depends on the breed & its pedigree. The better the pedigree the higher the $. Personally I think a good mutt is as good or if not better than show dogs. All the controlled breeding sets many of the expensive dogs up for problems especially things like hip dysplasia. You can pick up a great pup for 2 or $300 every where
