I read the Bible many times and so contradicting! An eye for an eye, but yet when getting ripped off. Offer up all your stuff!

I guess love is the answer, but where is the honor & righteous in all this?

Matthew 5:21-22 and esp 38-42
This does not contradict the old testament, it changes it. New laws for outdated ones. It is a direct quote from Jesus. When Jesus came to earth His purpose and reason for being here made many of the old laws obsolete, replacing them with updated laws. In this case, ANYONE who harms another in any way is subject to severest judgement.
Righteousness and honor come in godly love for others. Loving our enemies as Christ says to do in the final bit of Matt 5.

An eye for an eye was a law used in the Old Testament, which Jesus later came and said should not be practiced anymore. Instead, you are to forgive the next person as many times as is humanly possible. What the Bible is trying to say here is that you should strive to be like Jesus, regardless of what you go through. Indeed, love is the answer to all things.

I know your right, It's really hard these days being humane in a human world.

You're right Dazzle...we need God to help us love and forgive and to do it over and over again. :) In Him, we can do all things. ;)

Yes, like Rose said, there's the Old Testament and the New Testament. The OT has all the harsh eye for an eye type stuff and the NT has all the lovey-dovey peace and harmony stuff.

The Bible is the opposite of the koran, in that the lovey-dovey stuff in the older Mecca suras are abrogated by the harsher violent stuff in the newer Medina suras.

I dunno ... if we "turn the other cheek", that means we forgive 3 times.
Because we have 4 "cheeks".

Well, please don't make the mistake to take me for a religious man. I am the opposite, but since I've put an effort to learn all the major religions, this is what the Koran says on this issue in Surah Al-Ma'idah:

"And therein We laid down (the following law) for them (- the Jews); life for life and eye for eye, and nose for nose, and ear for ear, and tooth for tooth and for (other) injuries an equitable retaliation. But HE WHO CHOOSES TO FORGO (the right) THERETO FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH, IT SHALL BE AN EXPIATION OF SINS FOR HIM. And whoever does not judge according to (the law) which Allâh has revealed, these it is who are the very unjust." [5:45]

Tell me which is more kind & righteous, The Bible or the Koran? Which is more abrogated in the harsher violent stuff - Bible or the Koran? Isn't it better to have an urge for learning, instead condemning others upon presumption?

It's not a matter of how much, but in which direction.

So, I agree that the Koran has numerous verses that is beyond cruelty but if we take this subject of justice is question, tell me, which is well directed, the command of a god that says "take an eye for an eye" or a command by a god that says " it's okay to take an eye for an eye, but if the victim chooses to forgive, than the god has no problem"? Which is better directed towards mercy & peace?

Well just compare the US to Afghanistan when the taliban were in charge. Yes, we have crime here because criminals just laugh at the revolving door justice system, but isn't that better than shooting people in the head in public executions at the soccer stadium?

Tony, that doesn't change the fact that the Bible is filled with contradictions.

I never said it wasn't, Momo, in fact there another question where I asserted with a comparison on how BOTH the koran and the Bible have major changes in them.

Yeah, one of the major changes is one that we both just agreed on!

@Sportsguy, I think you try too hard to make the Bible appear "harmonious" when it is not.
Report as
So now you admit that the koran has major changes and contradictions? Wow, I'm impressed at your progress :-)

In my experience the bible us just a collection of books and letters that really don't make sense UNLESS you ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand it. Next time before you read ask the Holy Spirit to help you and a whole new world of understanding will open up for you.

And, God helps us by sending others to help answer these questions, too. :)

He sure does lolo. But the Holy Spirit is the main teacher in my opinion. He's there when your alone just reading ready to teach if your willing to listen and learn.
Report as
Martinez good point. The Holy Spirit is the best teacher but we have to do our part too. When I say that I mean when you come upon a phrase or word you don't understand try looking it up in the dictionary or the concordance, even try checking out the Greek and Hebrew definitions, when you get the full definition then meditate and the Holy Spirit will give you the full understanding and show you how to apply it to your life today. That is my understanding of diligently seeking God's meaning for life in this age. Study to show thyself approved! Seek my face, you will find me! God bless you in your quest for wisdom.

You are so right nerti. I believe that so many people read it as you would a novel without the right mindset and heart then they wonder what's all the fuss about. While I can read a few verses and spend the day thinking about what it means or read something that I've read before and it hits me like THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS.

People are just so ignorant! An eye for an eye was interpreted LONG BEFORE JESUS as monetary compensation. This is the principle still in use in any civil law system. It was never applied or meant in the Hebrew Bible as physically taking out the offender's eye. When Christian imply or say that, that just lie. That was the case, however, under the Hammurabi code.

I find the laws in the Hebrew Bible similar to the Hammurabi code.
Report as
There are certainly many parallels. But the Hammurabi code was applied literally: the eye of the offender was taken out. In Mosaic law there was monetary compensation in the worth of an eye, as determined by a court of law.

An eye for an eye & the whole world would be blind. Where's the honor or righteousness in that?

If we read the Bible at face value, without a preconceived bias for finding errors, we will find it to be a coherent, consistent, and relatively easy-to-understand book. Yes, there are difficult passages. Yes, there are verses that appear to contradict each other. We must remember that the Bible was written by approximately 40 different authors over a period of around 1500 years. Each writer wrote with a different style, from a different perspective, to a different audience, for a different purpose. We should expect some minor differences. However, a difference is not a contradiction. It is only an error if there is absolutely no conceivable way the verses or passages can be reconciled. Even if an answer is not available right now, that does not mean an answer does not exist. Many have found a supposed error in the Bible in relation to history or geography only to find out that the Bible is correct once further archaeological evidence is discovered.

One word; Apologetics: It's the art of saying the Bible doesn't say what it actually means or doesn't mean what it actually says.
