To go from dark brown to bright red, you'll have to lighten some. Applying the red dye over your hair the way it is will simply result in reddish highlight, and not allow for the brightness you desire. I suggest going to a beauty supply store such as Sally's and getting a lightener. You don't necessarily have to "bleach" per se, but you do need to strip some color. They do have some products that are milder on your hair than bleach. Also...you want to get a product that is safe "on or off" the scalp. If you get one that is for "off the scalp," you might end up with some blistering on and around your scalp. Also...as for developer to mix the lightener with... 10 volume will give you minimal lift (take the least color out and let the least color adhere), 20 volume is in the middle, and 30 volume will give high lift (remove the most color, the fastest...but also give you the most intense and darkest results when dyeing your hair red.) Additionally, you want an awesome conditioner for after color treatment...one with protein. Ion is good and sold in small, one time use packets. Don't forget gloves. Oh, and mix in a non-metalic bowl with a non-metalic utensil. ASK for help!!
