Better traction so they don't slip. Like putting chains on tires when driving on ice.

Spikes or "cleats" are used mostly on natural surfaces ie. (grass) to help an athlete maintain stability and traction. The length of the spikes depends on the condition of the playing surface. Some athletes are known to use the spikes, to intimidate opponents when sliding towards an opposing player, (spikes high).
