What is the "Book of Shadows"?

A BOS is a journal of sorts, that one would keep a written record of everything that they feel is important to their path. It's primarily a term used in Paganism and by Witches, and would contain things like rituals, spells (if used), correspondences, and really anything that comprises "needed" information, or that they'd like to keep handy for reference purposes.

It's doesn't really have anything to do with any particular time period. You might be thinking of the term "grimoire", which was used in a similar way historically.

A book of shadows is basically an occultists notebook.

It's like a magic journal. Don't buy into the above answer. Christians seem to like lumping pagans and Satanists into the same category.
