Was there piranhas millions of years ago as it was told in the movie Piranhas 3D?

I do not think there were Piranhas as it was told in the movie Piranhas 3D. Although, there is a type of fish that is referred to as a piranha or piraa and it is known to be an omnivorous freshwater fish that is known for its prickly teeth, and a voracious appetite for meat.
