What animal is eating the basil in my garden?

I had a beautiful crop of basil growing until a few days ago when I went out to pick some and found only the stems remaining. We put up a fence and managed to find some more basil plants - not easy this time of year. The next day after planting them, we found the little varmint had managed to get under the fence and feast on the new plants. We fastened the fence down better but the damage is done. I'm guessing a ground hog?

Some of the most common insects that are known to feed on basil leaves are aphids, slugs, spider mites and also the Japanese beetles. Most of the insects do attack and eat basil leaves because of the lack of water, cold weather and insufficient sunlight. If you live near a wooded area, it's most likely deer.
