What is the most effective martial art for self defense?

I am a large framed 15 year old. What would be the most effective martial art I could learn in need of self defense?

It depends on where you live and what the local laws are. If you live in the northeast or California, where all the cities have ferocious weapons-control laws, your best bet is unarmed combat -- and I'd recommend Ai-ki-do because it's very effective and purely defensive, and you can argue that in court. If you live in the south or midwest or Hawaii, where the courts frown only on evil-evil guns and knives, then your best bet is to carry a cane or walking-stick and study Quarterstaff; you can learn that through the Society for Creative Anachronism -- a medieval history-recreation club which has branches just about everywhere. If you live in the southwest or Alaska, where guns and knives are an accepted part of the daily scenery, then get a large caliber handgun (.38 or better), get whatever permits you need in order to carry it with you, and practice-practice-practice until you can hit within the 7-ring at 25 yards, nine shots out of ten. Wherever you live and whatever art you choose, ***PRACTICE*** until you're totally competent with it. Skill (with anything) beats lack of skill (with anything) every time.

hi any art is great ,there are only bad instructors. choose well and watch with a parent. some arts are inside. i mean grappling.

tae kwon do and karate styles are both attacking with long distance foot techniques and hand and elbos, and grappling and ground fighting. most modern arts use techniques from other arts and we evolve. most arts employ all tools like knees and elbos and hips as attacking tools.

remember the best thing in self defense is a brain. dont go in bad places. dont ignore the surroundings. and dont say bad things.
best of training

And im a large framed sixteen year old so you know this is good advice. Also, get a book called Get Tough, but be really careful with the stuff in it. A good kickboxing book is complete kickbxing, or muay thai unleashed

All of the above answers are competition based martial arts and won't save you in a real attack. Krav Maga is widely considered to be the best self defense arts. It's Israeli and takes the best of all martial arts forms and simplifies it. It's famous for simultaneous defend and attack and defending against multiple attackers. It's meant for smaller person against bigger attacker. It's becoming very popular in movies such as Jennifer Lopez in Enough, and I believe Tyler Perry learned it for his new movie Alex Cross. Nearly everything they teach you involves a groin strike and/or eye strike these are not allowed in the other competition based martial arts as you're not wanting to cause permanent damage, but for a real attacker anything goes and that's what they train you for. They do a lot of stress drills where your eyes are closed and you're not sure who is gonna attack you or what they're gonna attack you with, so you learn to react quickly. It's a huge confidence builder but it's tough just keep that in mind.
