Beware border collies have an incredible amount of energy that will need to be channelled into some activity. Besides tearing up your house and back yard that is.

I will tell my friend that!

I second JewelnMiasMom's warning about Borders. I have a Border mix, and she's a lot of dog for someone who doesn't know what they're getting into. Which is why I have her instead of the family who used to have her. It's a great breed, but definitely not the best choice for everyone.

Labradors are always good and beagles also.

In my opinion Golden Retrievers are the best. The only con is that they're long haired so they shed a lot, Labrador Retrievers have shorter hair. Both are great family dogs.

Help your friend to a little research. Go to your local public library and get a book on dog breeds with good pictures and descriptions. Read about common characteristics of different breeds - energy level, grooming needs, trainability, barkiness, etc. Then, go to your local animal shelter and see what's available. Based on what you learned, pick out a few dogs to meet and spend a little time with. Mostly likely, one of them will pick your friend.

I have a lhasa apso. She's EXTREMELY smart (I taught her to sit in one day, and how to fetch including dropping the ball in my hand in under a week). She's just over a year old, and the breed gets to be about the size of a shih-tzu (maybe a bit smaller). She's a spunky little thing who loves whining more than barking and loves to play with you. They are hypo allergenic and barely shed (if any at all) :) Go to google images and type in "lhasa apso" (type in short hair or long hair depending on your preference) or go to Wikipedia to find out more about them :) If you want to find an adoptable one in your are, go to petfinder(dot)com or craigslist.
Even though they LOVE playing with you, they also have a great metabolism and don't need to be exercised as frequently as other dogs (that's no excuse not to play with them, though!).

P.S: Mine is black with white on her chest and stomach with a bit of gray on her ears. I keep her in a pet cut (summer cut) so that she doesn't get too hot, but you can keep them at any hair length.
