You could be referring to "Our Mutual Friend." The book was actually the 19th and was published in 1864. It is one of his most sophisticated works, combining psychological insight with social analysis. It centers on, in the words of criticJ. Hillis Miller, "money, money, money, and what money can make of life" but is also about human values. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dickens for more information.
