How do you stop a panic attack? Please don't say anything about a paper bag, tried it , doesn't help, please help thanks

when I have panic attacks( like now) I feel like there's something caught in my throat , how do I control this?

Report as

I don't know if this will help you but it did me. I found a comfortable place to lay flat, closed my eyes and tried to control my breathing. I cleared my mind of everything but something pleasant. Soothing music helped too.

Besides a comfortable place to lay down you can go for a walk clear your head or just step outside to get some fresh air listen to some music

If you have nothing to panic about don't even think about a panic attack

Verne gave a great answer. I always tell my staff that while at work if you're feeling stressed and feel the need to escape, close your door, turn off the phone and lights and then take a 5-10 minute "vacation" in your mind. It could be a memorable vacation or a special event or whatever "gets you away".

Since you have already had medical advice, try someone different. There are several ways to overcome panic attacks. Sometimes medication is necessary until a person has learned to control the behavior. I went through this myself. I now just shut my eyes and take deep breathes. You have to teach your brain how to control this.

Good luck

Well the good news is you acknowledge that you have panic attacks. You should see a doctor. My husband continues to say he "used to" have panic attacks as a kid. Strangely it's clear to those who really know him that he still has panic attacks.

Do you help him through these attacks or times and what is successful and what is not as you are his life partner.

When he gas a panic attach he doesn't get hyper or carry on. It's more of a thing where he sort of freezes and doesn't know what to do. I just have to tell him (sort of sternly or he just doesn't seem to hear) what to do. It works okay about most things . One concern I have as a diabetic is if I get a low and can't communicate I'm not comfortable that he'd know what to do. Little scary.

Anyone who experiences what they think is a panic attack would be well-advised to see his or her doctor, because there are specific medical conditions which can mimic the symptoms of panic attack, even though they can't be accurately labeled as panic attack causes. These medical conditions include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia); overactive thyroid (hypothyroidism); and a cardiac condition known as mitral valve prolapse.
