We use to call our day at the beach 'The Bundy vacation' from that tv show Married with children, the beach was a 90 min drive we left early stopped at a local fruit stand just before the beach loaded up grapes/plums/water melon tons and drinks stayed all day ate the fruits.Sunset we would head home stop at A@W ,hot dog/ff/ root beer, get home around midnight fall into bed,,cost gas and all about $45.00 but was priceless .fun day..
Also we would rent in our own area a nice motel with indoor pool for a night in the winter.
Some ideas to do for a family vacation that is fun and not too costly include going for a hike, picnic and swimming. You can also visit some of the best museums in your area or you can have your vacation in a theme park.
Camping near a nice lake or clean river is always a good family thing to do. If your on the east coast The Great Smokey Mountains are great. If your in the mountains then head for the beach instead. A bicycle trip can be fun too.
