Do I really have to wait for my two year plan to be over before I can get a new phone for AT&T?

I have had the iPhone 4 for 7 months now and last my dad told me the company told him was that I had to wait till the two year plan is up before I can get a new one. Whereas before, I got six different phones in under two years, so what's the difference? Or is it just if I destroy my phone that i can't get a new one for two years?

You are probably under contract for 2 years with that phone, meaning you are paying off the phone for 2 years to the company and getting billed for their service. Nothing in life is free, its a question of who gets the bill.

No you don't have to wait a full two years. But if you want to change phones within the (assuming) two year contract, then you may have to pay more to cancel it.

You can do an early upgrade but you only get $75 towards a new phone. Just wait it out

You can get a new phone anytime that you want but if it isn't your time to renew your contract or upgrade you will have to pay full price for it and they aren't cheap.
