Why is my bromeliad turning orange?

I just got a bromeliad that looks like half Ostara bromeliad and half Blushing bromeliad (I forgot the actual type) and the middle flowery looking part is turning orange, but is originally pinkish red! How did this happen? I kept the water damp and kep it in low light like I was supposed to. Also, that whole part just fell out!

The Bromeliad actually undergoes these color phases. It starts out as red, fades to orange, then yellow, pink and finally pale green. After this, it will stop flowering as the season is over. However, you should watch your watering methods to prevent harm to the plant. For further details on care of the Bromeliad, visit http://www.ehow.com/info_8448692_do-bromeliads-brown.html.

Yeah, I thought it was flowering, untill I touched it and found out it was loose! I tugged, barely enough for it to move at all, and it came out, leaving some white stuff behind. My mom think it rotted out.
