What can I do to help train my Shepard malamute cross to stop barking at neighbors, mail carriers, etc.?

she is a three year old female, very sweet to her family but pretty ferocious to strangers. I know it's good for a dog to be protective but she is frightening people. She comes right away when I call her, but I'd like to give her some kind of command to stay quiet and close rather than go charging up to them barking. She bit another neighbor dog who came running up to us while taking a walk, now I'm paranoid she will do this again. I'd like to take her to a dog obedience class but don't know if I have the time... any suggestions?

I keep my dogs in the house or in the yard. They are not allowed to run up on anyone. Barking? You bet. Only a fool would attempt to invade my dogs' territory. I see barking as a very GOOD thing.

To train your Sheppard Malamute cross to stop barking at neighbors, you need to come up with a word that the dog will identify with to keep quiet. If the dog starts backing, you can use a word like 'stay' so that the dog can know whenever he barks and she is told 'stay' she will stop barking.
