I found this definition which might throw some light on it:
The state of being sexually attracted to males, females, transsexuals, intersexes (hermaphroditic), transvestites, androgynes, etc...Kind of like being bisexual, except bi only refers to two sexes.
So the difference between pansexual and bisexual would be contained in that last sentence. Obviously, in the modern world there are more than two genders.
I'm rather relieved that it didn't refer to unusual activities in the kitchen.
Pansexual was explained to me as looking for a connection rather than a gender. It's being open to both sexes.

A person who is pansexual may be attracted to all genders and sexes, but have a preference, (for example) for pre-operative transsexual people, other people who are pansexuals, masculine lesbians, intersexed people, etc.

It basically means people who consider themselves gender-blind when it comes to sexuality.
Beyond bisexual - it suggests gender, or lack of it, doesn't come into a pansexual's decisions and feelings about sex.
I think the reason your friend wouldnt tell what it means is because he doesn't want you to realize the truth about him.
So from listening to all these answers it sounds like pansexual means you are into pretty much anything, with pretty much anybody. Right? I mean no offense it just sounds kind of exhausting. Im so glad im normal and am only into old buicks. Oh alright, and my wife too. But you shouldnt stop being someones friend because of thier sexuality.
