Why can't you rent a car without credit card?

I offered cash but they don't want it also they don't take my debit card either so stupid what heck is wrong with this companies

Some dealers that rent cars allow you to use a debit card. At least they do in my town. The others want that extra security with a credit card. I know it is stupid because not everyone has a credit card, but we all have debit cards.

Car rental companies need credit cards because your true identity can be established from them. It also makes it easier for law enforcement agencies to track you should you do something and run.

Assurance that they will get some money out of you in case you do things like go over miles, wear and tear, wreck it, etc.

This happened to me many years ago. The problem with cash or a debit card is that you are getting a $20,000 car and offering only a few bucks as security. A credit card will allow them to charge the whole cost of the vehicle if you destroy it or steal it.
