Are you supposed to drink protein shakes before or after you work out?

I got some protein shakes called "Muscle Milk" but I don't know if it's best to drink them before or after my workout.

After! Protein helps repair muscles and helps you build

I think this should be after you work out as this is the recovery period and protein is needed. Protein will rebuild the muscle tissues that may have been broken during the work out. However the protein shakes can still be taken before the work out to provide energy, although protein provides little energy.

It's works best if you take half before and half after.

After. Drinking before might make you feel sick.

All the bodybuilders I know drink them after a workout. Does your gym have a nutritionist? They can help. Or watch some people in the gym. Just ask one of them, i am sure they will be glad to offer advice that will be suitable.

Never workout on an empty stomach. You need energy for the workout, so use an energy source, before the workout.

A good protein source, like Muscle Milk, is needed to build or re-build muscle. You should eat ( or drink) within 45 minutes after the workout. That's when the body is most efficient with what you consume.

(My undergrad degree is in nutrition.)

Hi I wanted to comment on this question but thought I'd run this by you first because of your education in nutrition. I was my husband's "traine/coach" when he was training several years ago for the Huntsman Senior Games in Utah. I researched a lot of athletic power drinks and found Accolorade to be very helpful to him before-during-and after his daily training. I found this site on the product and I'm interested in your take on it before I post anything. Thanks for your input.
