What is the "No Child Left Behind Act"?

Report as

Short answer
No Child Left Behind requires all government-run schools receiving federal funding to administer a state-wide standardized test annually to all students. This means that all students take the same test under the same conditions. Schools which receive Title I funding through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 must make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in test scores (e.g. each year, its fifth graders must do better on standardized tests than the previous year's fifth graders).

Thanks. But children are only in 5th grade for one year, despite the ones who are held back. How can fifth graders do better each year if their grade changes?
Report as
This years group of fifth graders must do better than last years. Make sense now?
The problems have been numerous including how can each year do better than the previous? Eventually you hit a wall. Also the act includes all students including those in English as a second language classes and those who are intellectually disabled.
The act has so many flaws that many states are asking to be opted out.

Another terrible bill passed.

But nobody can blame ibama for this one. It was all gw bush. It is Obama that is allowing states to opt out.
I only point this out because you seem predisposed to want to blame everything on Obama, not because he is my favorite prez. I have agreed and disagreed with him on things, just like most any prez.

Different states have different testing in TX you take a standardized test up till your senior year.
Report as
@messy. No child left behind us federal law. Unless allowed to opt out Texas must meet the requirements also.

@Boo: If you're trying to say I blame everything on Obama, I politely disagree. So far with you all I've spoken about was Obama and you've only seen me talk about things I don't like. Not everything bad is his fault. I'll also point out that when I said "Another terrible bill passed" I wasn't inferring to Obama.

@mad. That remark was a bit tongue in cheek. I keep forgetting that stuff like that doesn't type out well
Report as
@Boo: Oh, I understand. Sometimes there's no way of making something sound right. Haha.

By the way, not that I'm upset, but why do you call me "mad"? The noun in my SN is "Marcus". :P "Mad" is an adjective or an adverb.
Report as
I have a tendency to use the first part of someone's name hence madmarcus becomes mad. Mostly because I cannot remember all of the names.
Report as
Oh, I see. I have trouble with names, too. Do you use Ask.com on the iPhone? It's kind of a pain that you can't read and type at once on there.
Report as
iPad and yes it's a pain. I can never remember everything.

Haha I'm STILL good! :) I went to the beach for the first time this year, FINALLY! It was overcast, but the water was nice. HEY, what was that nehi stuff you were talking about on another answer btw?
Report as
I love overcast! It provides a ceiling to my world instead of a blank void, completing the atmosphere. For the sake of a good time, I hope you feel the same way. Did you say this was your first time being at a beach, or just your first time this year?

Nehi is a soda that was very popular in the 50's - mid-60's, I think it was; but almost no one sells it anymore (I think it's still manufactured). It's my favorite soda; better than Mountain Dew!

Hah wow very poetic Marcus! Yeah I definitely like it when it's cool & drizzly out, since I'm inside a lot, so it makes me feel less guilty for being indoors ha. First time this year, not ever!! I used to live 10 minutes from the beach so we'd go more often, but now we're a little farther so not as often. Well at home I like clouds, but at the beach I prefer sunny skies. The water was still fun x) Is Nehi lemon-lime like Sprite? ALSO, I was wondering, why's your user name MAD Marcus? Mad like crazy or mad like angry?
Report as
Nehi has different flavors. Nothing specific. Actually, original Mountain Dew is lemon-lime.

My name is MadMarcus as in crazy.

Oh okay. You don't seem very crazy! But I do remember you saying you had agoraphobia a loooong time ago. Does that have to do with it?
