What kind of dog should i get?

i want a dog that can be trained to be a protector but that can be a fun loving pet also and is good with kids (my cousin is 5). i want to get it as a puppy so i can raise and train it. and i want a medium to large size dog. i live in texas if that matters

I have a Lab/Pit mix and he is the most loyal dog i have ever had, he is very protective, and he is great with other pets and kids but if the kids are really small keep a close eye on them because he is huge and knocks little kids over when he tries to play with them

The breed of dog you should get is a German shepherd. A German shepherd can be trained to be a protector, but it can also be a fun loving pet and is good with kids.

a boxer.
They are protective of their familys, and very sweet. They seem like they wouldnt be good with kids, but they are gentle when needed.

A pit bull makes a great family pet but can be a protector. The best family dog we have ever had while I grew up and now. My kids absolutely love the ours.
I would say a great Pyrenees, but the Texas summer would be way to hot. but they make great family dogs also.

I have six new Gernan sheperd puppies added to my collections. They are very costly for me to manage them now because my budjet is exhausted, am giving them out to persons who can take care of them, USD700 each. You must convince me you can take care of them.

Get a Golden Reteriver. They are EXTREMLEY good with kids. I also have a young 3yr old cousin and they have a golden reteriver. She protects him and lets him play with her all the time. Hes pulled her hair and stuff but she has NEVER snaped on him.
German Shepherds and nice dogs and all but they arnt always good with kids. They are very dominant too.

There are many breeds that sound like what you are looking for. I suggest you watch a few episodes of the show dogs 101 on animal planet so you can get some info. on a few breeds. But you don't need to get it as a puppy in order to train it! Older dogs CAN learn new tricks. I taught a 6 year old dog to sit and stay. Also, many shelters ( mainly non kill shelters) practice on training the dogs while they are at the shelter. I volunteer at a shelter, and there was one dog who had learned about six commands from the shelter workers

if you are looking for a fun loving, family dog, but can also be protective, i would recommend a golden retriever or a lab. a German Sheppard is a loyal dog but they are not always the best around young children
