If my husband and I filed taxes separately, could I get financial aid?

I went to the college today, to talk to financial aid. the guy at the counter told me that because my husband and I filed separately, we had to file an amendment. is that true?

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure it will be hard, unless you both have very low income. They will want both of your incomes, and will take them both into consideration. I applied for financial aid when I was 22, and couldn't get it because my dad and his wife made too much money, even though I didn't live with him, and he doesn't support me, or claim me on his taxes.

Yea but the guy said that we had to file them together to be able to continue, he did not say anything about our income.

The only reason you both have to be on there is because of your income. That's how they determine how much you're eligible for. I don't think simply filing separately will disqualify you, but like I said, my situation was a bit different. Instead of talking to the financial aid office at your school, call or you can chat online with a representative from the actual financial aid website. They will probably be able to answer your questions more in depth.
