As management, I have scoped out prospective employees theough social media sites, to get a feel for their character.. I have also terminated people for the things they have said on their Facebook wall.. I work with extremely important confidential caseloads that fall under HIPPA guidelines. There have been those that have violated those guidelines and posted info on sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and others. Not only can they (and some have) be separated from the company, they can be held liable in court for info they post. Today's society feels the need to let everyone know when they're in the restroom. So when YOU put it out there publicly, it's not a MATTER of "right" or "fair"... Its available...

Well it's not privacy, because it's on the Internet, so practically anyone can read it.

It's a social networking site that anyone has a right to view. If your worried about your privacy then set your profile to private.

If you put it out there for anyone to read, you have chosen to make it public, and they are within their legal rights to look at it!

Yes, if they don't like what they see they will not hire you so becareful what you post. Thats the first thing they go looking at is your fb before they decide to hire you

I dont think that should be the deciding factor though. If they look its prob just to see what kind of character you have. Things of interest and stuff. Im not sure if they can use it against you they wont tell you that. Is it an equal oppurtunity employer? I think everyone should have that right. Just be open about stuff. Good luck

To address what everyone's saying about facebook being public, actually there's an option for strict privacy settings. If a person wanted to they could put privacy settings on their fb that would allow no one to see their pictures, information, or wall posts. So no, your information isn't all over the Internet for everyone to see unless you want it to be, or unless someone feels the need to hack into your account.

To answer the question, I've been hearing lately that many of those hiring will refuse you a job unless you provide your fb password so that they can check you out. And I think it's completely ridiculous to invade someone's personal life that way, because who's to say that their personal life is going to interfere with their work?

It's going to get to that! Don't put anything out there you don't want shared. That simple.
Look at all the stuff that comes back to bite people( politicians ) in the butt years later...
Now it's so easy to dig up the dirt... Employers want to know who you are.

If employers need to go to Facebook to see whether they should hire someone, then there is no need for them to interview, they can anytime go to the Facebook and hire and fire.... Hiring is not Joke if someone think that way...

Currently yes. Facebook is not considered private because it is a very public social media. When you join something like Facebook you are basically waving your rights to privacy per your privacy settings. Its a good place to find out what people are really like too.
