Fill the 3 gal. and dump it into the 5 gal. Then fill the 3 gal. and dump enough to fill the 5 gal. The remainder is 1 gal.

Yep, your way is much better than mine (mine required five transfers, including back into the barrel).

There may be a better way, but one way is to fill the 5, empty it into the 3, which leaves you with 2 in the five. Pour the 3 back into the barrel, fill the 5 and pour it into the 3, leaving you with 4 gal in the five gallon container. Then pour the 3 back into the barrel. When you pour the contents of the 5 gallon container (which is now 4 gallons) back into the 3 gallon container, you're left with one gallon in the 5 gallon container.

I just did it on pen and paper. There may be a more optimized way.

Easy: You measure the three/five gallon container (your choice), and then you divide the measurement by three/five units. I hope it worked and I hope it helped

Fill the three gallon container with oil, then pour it into the five gallon container. Fill the three gallon container a second time and pour it into the five gallon container until the five gallon container is full. You will have one gallon remaining in the three gallon container.
