A Maltese is the perfect dog for them. They are calm loving don't shed and are content to be with people doing nothing. They travel well.

I would say a dog that is small, non aggresive, and loving. I think it should be a yorkie.

Beagles and Pomeranian's are good dogs.

I have a great suggestion if they have a yard. A Greyhound. They are lazy, don't tear up the furniture, very smart, very easy to walk. Retired racers are tired and just want lots of love. I have had 2. They run the yard and then they wanna be lazy :) my two small dogs are more work and bark more than the Greyhound! I loved having them. Good with little kids too ;)

Poodles are a a good bet for them. Take your grandparents, if they want to go, look at a few. I don't know where you live but there usually is local advertising, pet stores, breeders, vet's often post different breeds somewhere in their office, ask the vet. A dog/cat etc. Is great companionship for them & an added interest. You are a thoughtful person to be concerned. Poodles don't shed, are intelligent and great friends-but it's really a joint decision. no one can tell what will pull at their heart strings.

A yorkie or a minature poodle. They don't shed. If you go to the pound you can get an older dog that is a lot easier to handle. And at places like the Humane Society the dogs are already potty trained, trained to go for walks, and do some tricks. If you get an older dog especially (which you can only get from the pound or rescue society) they have a lot less energy. And yorkies can live to be 17 years old so even if you get a 5 year old one they will still live a long time. PLEASE don't go to a pet store or a breeder! Pet stores get all their dogs from puppy mills where they TORTURE dogs and or breeders where the dogs are treated poorly and almost always have health problems due to over breeding.
Hope this helps! Good luck!
