I think the biggest hero known to mankind who has felt the greatest pain is Nelson Mandela of South Africa. Nelson was imprisoned for more than four years, and doing hard labor in the prison. Nelson Mandela is one of the most revered statesmen, who led the struggle to replace the apartheid regime of South Africa.
Depends on how you define hero and how you define pain. Given a 24-hour period of emotional turbulence, Jesus was in quite a bit of pain; but does this compare to Detrich Bonhoeffer imprisoned and tortured and eventually killed along with Jews for months under Hitler, who refused to assassinate the man based on his commitment to non-violence? I don't know.
Jesus suffered most severely throughout the trials, torture, and crucifixion (Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23; John 19). As horrible as His physical suffering was, it was nothing compared to the spiritual suffering He went through. Second Corinthians 5:21 says, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Jesus had the weight of the sins of the entire world on Him (1 John 2:2). It was sin that caused Jesus to cry out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46). So, as brutal as Jesus' physical suffering was, it was nothing compared to His having to bear our sins and die to pay the penalty for them (Romans 5:8).
Wow, you didn't set this up for a specific answer or anything. Heroes don't need to suffer to be great. Real heroes are people like Norman Borlaug who is credited with saving over a billion people from starvation. Heroes are not suicidal Rabbis who die in the name of unchanging dogma and divine command- only to send his followers on similar missions under the constant threat of eternal torment.

There's a very famous and popular book (first of its kind) -- "The 100: A Ranking Of The Most Influential Persons In History" -- written by a Christian named Michael H. Hart, that says, Mohammad (the prophet of Islam) is the greatest man that ever lived. He ranked Jesus 3rd (THIRD).
