Most people would use fans. They would also dress lightly and have their windows open to keep the house or office aired and cool. People would also drink lots of water and use hand held fans when it was too hot.
Those people were obviously tougher than we are. In the past people were just more immune to whining, pissing, and moaning about heat and other very beatable issues. Heat was the least of their concerns.
There were many more deaths due to heat stroke, exhaustion, dehydration, etc. A/C has saved countless lives. We kept the house closed up and dark during the day to keep it cool and then opened everything up at night again. We also used a lot of fans. As kids we played in the sprinkler, wading pools and sat in the shade with our friends. It was hot, but we had more social time.
They used time machines to travel forward to an era that had air conditioning. Unfortunately, they caused a great many paradoxes, and created so many divergent parallel universes that they were forced to destroy the time machines, hide the technology, and just go swimming.
My grandma once told me that's why porches were there. To sit on in the shade and try to stay cool. She also told me that they would get wet burlap sacks and hang them on the porch so the breeze would blow through them and hep cool them down.
Back then, People used to live in caves to cool down in hot weather. There were handheld fans. People had other personal methods for keeping cool, such as hanging wet laundry in doorways, sleeping in refrigerated sheets, and keeping one’s underwear in the freezer. Hope this helps. =D
I believe that the summer after ac was invented their was a huge drop in murders and domestic violence. before ac was invented, summer sucked, but people used solid bricks of ice with a fan running on the ice to create cool air.
Living in central AZ, where the temperature gets to be 110% in the shade during the summer, I have to admit that I have no idea how anyone survived this kind of heat without our modern day cooling systems - especially since they insisted on wearing woolen suits, high collars, and the women were covered from head to toe with "extensive" clothing. I have often wondered how they managed it. I guess it makes us a bunch of whiners compared to those who were here before us - since they were the one's who helped settle this country.
