None of them copied the other. Kelly Clarkson stated that she voluntarily gave One Direction a go ahead to record the song. She wrote the song, but was later requested by Simon Cowell who is helping drive One Direction's career, to let the group do the song. She gave them a trial, which resulted to the song hitting the air waves.
