If a woman gets pregnant by a man that uses drugs, what are the affects on the baby, if any? Is this bad for the baby?

My friend's husband uses drugs and she recently became pregnant. She's concerned that his drug use will affect the health of her baby. Is it possible for the drug use of the dad affect the baby's growth and healthy even if he doesn't use the drugs around the baby?

Now come on people, there's no mention of the drugs he's using. Any drugs will affect the sperm to a certain degree so I don't know how you can say no to it affecting the fetus. Even certain substances in tobacco has been known to be bad for the sperm. The child certainly has a better chance if the mom isn't doing or around drugs.

Not true it will have no affect on the baby even if she got pregnant if he was high.

But the fact the father does drugs will effect the baby once it's born by having a father that is a drug head so hopefully he will quit

I was so high when I got my girl pregnant and 17 Yeats later my son has a scholarship at Stanford. So to answer your question....don't worry.

Her baby shouldn't have any problems. If the father is an addict, then there is a higher risk of his offspring to become an addict. She needs to make sure that she educates her child about the danger of drugs and alcohol (when they are at the appropriate age). Also she needs to make sure that the kids father doesn't use drugs in front of him/her or is inebriated around him. He needs to be a proper role model for her child, not to send the wrong message because when the kid gets older he may think that if his dad does drugs then it must be okay for him/her to do drugs.

Dangerous WRONG answers. This is a quote from actual DOCTORS
"Studies are now showing that a Father who uses drugs at the time of conception can also have negative, even life-threatening effects on the child. While a Father’s drug use cannot cause addiction in the child, it can mutate the DNA which has a direct result on the physical and mental capabilities of the child.

Deformities and retardation can be the result of the Father’s drug use. For years, the Mother was always assumed to be responsible when there was a child born with a deformity or reduced brain function. It is now known that is not always the case. Even if the Mother is drug-free, if the Father uses drugs, it can affect the child. The scope of problem has not yet been realized. Increased deformities have been established but studies are still ongoing."
